High in the mountains of Myanmar, in the region of Mandalay, the beautiful town of Pyin Oo Lwin shimmers like a diamond. This is where the epicentre of Myanmar’s coffee industry is located, with hundreds of well-known coffee estates and businesses roasting their beans here before distributing them all over the globe. Toiling away at 1100 metres above sea level, there’s U Ye Myint, the owner of the Shwe Yi Mon Estate. Having earned a master’s degree in botany, U Ye Myint now uses his 80 acres of land for bold experiments: he’s constantly putting various plant distribution methods, shade tree species, fertilisers, and irrigation systems to the test. This drive towards innovation and careful attention to the smallest of details can be seen plainly in every cultivation stage, and can certainly be tasted in each single bean too.
