What should I do if I've forgotten to replace the old water filter and it's been sitting inside my coffee machine for six months now?

First of all, make sure to remove the old water filter and throw it away. Afterwards, run the descaling program on your appliance (see the user manual of your coffee machine), then insert a new filter and activate it.

What's the difference between this water filter and the filters manufactured by Philips/Saeco?

All of these water filters are designed to do the same thing. The only thing that differs is the manufacturer.

How often should I replace the water filter with a new one?

“You should replace the water filter as soon as your coffee machine prompts you to do so, but no less frequently than once every 3 months.

NOTE: if you haven’t replaced the old water filter on time, make sure to run the descaling program before inserting a new filter.”

Is it true that, as long as I use a water filter and replace it on time, I'll only have to run the descaling program once 8 filters have been replaced?

Yes, that’s absolutely true! It’s essential for you to replace the filters on time though: otherwise, the coffee machine is very likely to request you to run the descaling program earlier.
